The original chapel in Sutton Place ceased to exist by 1591.
By 1857 Captain Salvin, who had allowed the modern private chapel to become a public mission, realised that it was inadequate for this purpose and should be replaced by a public church. Funds for this project were provided in the will of his sister, Miss Elizabeth May Salvin, who died in December 1874.
The foundation stone of St Edward's Catholic Church, was laid on the site of King Edward's hunting lodge on 20th September 1875 and the Bishop of Southwark consecrated the new church on 27th September 1876. The ancient bell of the old chapel at Sutton House was hung in the new bell cote over the West gable.
