SMALL COTTAGES
continue

We have no way of knowing what smaller cottages may have existed in the locality before 1841 when the Tithe Map was published; but this was on a large enough scale (25 inches/mile) to depict even the smallest buildings and was accompanied by a detailed registerof every plot of land and every building so it provides a solid basis for research from then on.

From this map we find that in 1841 in addition to the eight habitations previously described there were five small cottages in the locality.

Four of these were on Stringers Common, East of the Woking Road. Three were said to be owned by James Hack and occupied by John Peters but neither of these names appears in the 1841 census so their inhabitants must have been among the seven households listed under Stringers Common which we have not been able to identify as occupying other buildings. These three cottages were eventually demolished in the late1970's and replaced by the three bungalows in White House Lane. The site of the fourth cottage, occupied by Henry Stacey, lies within the grounds of the White House.

Finally, on the property of Hurst Farm there was a small cottage near Britton's Pond which was occupied by Henry and Susannah Potter during the period from 1851 to 1891.
